As soon as the cold season comes in, you know it’s time to start winterizing your swimming pool. Winterizing a pool involves a variety of steps that you need to do to save it from damage during the chilly months.

After you have balanced the chemicals in the water, lowered the water level, cleaned and removed every accessory in the water, you need to cover your pool to prevent leaves, dirt and other debris from ruining all your hard work.

Although a cover normally does the job of protecting your swimming pool from elements, sometimes they don’t stay in place, especially when there is strong wind.

You need pool cover clips to secure it and keep your pool well-maintained. These clips act like fasteners that fix pool covers firmly in place. Backyard Ocean has cover slips for various pool sizes. Get them now while they’re on sale.

Dirty pools are gross, but stained pools are more repulsive. Those green, brown and black marks at the sides and bottom of your swimming pool are enough to turn people away.

Pool stains are caused by a number of things. They can be all due to algae bloom, mineral deposits or simply a mottling on the pool.

Algae stains are caused by poor water circulation. They also appear when your pool disinfectant level is low. Mineral stains, on the other hand, are not as widely spread as algae stains and are often concentrated in small crevices. Mottling are natural streaks that come with the kind of pool you have (usually plaster) and cannot be removed.

Organic and mineral stains are fairly easy to eliminate. To remove algae stains, you need a good pool algaecide that zaps out algae growth. Algaecides are pool chemicals that eradicate all sorts of algae in your pool. These treatments are easy and safe to use. For mineral stains, you can use a rust and scale remover which lightens stains and prevents browning of your pool. Just apply it to the areas where there are plenty of stains, scrub and go!

Say goodbye to dirty pools and dive right in!

Having a swimming pool at home means hours of endless fun splashing in the water, but owning one can make your energy bills skyrocket.

No need to worry, though, because you can reduce your monthly utility bills by following these tips:

  1. Use a solar pool cover to reduce water heat loss.
  2. Lower the temperature on your heater to 78°F for fitness swimming and 81°F for recreational swimming. Reduce the thermostat even further between 8-10° if you’re using your pool only on weekends.
  3. Decrease the speed of your pool pumps. Better yet, choose a smaller circulation pump to cut down on energy consumption. This should be able to circulate pool water as efficiently as the bigger, more energy-consuming ones.
  4. De-clog your filters. Bunged filters work doubly hard in cleaning your pool and therefore consume more energy.
  5. Fix pool cracks right away. Leaking pools can lead to plenty of water loss overtime. They are also harder to fix when the cracks get bigger.

By following these energy efficiency tips, you can shave off as much as 50% off on your energy bills.
