As spring draws closer, we look forward to spending more time under the sun. Before we could do that, we need to get rid of the remnants of winter.
One way to welcome the new season is to open up the swimming pool. Instead of hiring a professional to clean it, use some old-fashioned elbow grease.

  1. Check your equipment and supplies.
  2. Before anything else, make sure that you have everything you need. You don’t want to be in the middle of cleaning only to find out that one of your filters is broken or that you ran out of pool chemicals.

  3. Remove the pool cover.
  4. Get rid of accumulated water, leaves, and debris on top of the cover. Drain the water first then rake the leaves before you remove it completely. This way, no additional dirt will get into the pool.

  5. Reattach your pool equipment.
  6. Connect the filters, cartridges, heaters, and other equipment. Take out the plugs and other winterizing accessories.

  7. Fill the pool with water.
  8. Make sure the water reaches the skimmer. Run the pool vacuum for a few hours before adding the pool chemicals.

  9. Treat the pool water.
  10. See to it that the pH level of the water is balanced. Use a pH balancer as needed. Shock the pool and use algaecide to prevent algae growth.

As soon as the pool is ready, you can jump in and enjoy the water. Make it even more fun by asking a few friends over to celebrate the arrival of spring with a pool party!

Keeping a swimming pool clean can be challenging, especially when it is used regularly. Regular or frequent use causes invisible particles to build up in the pool water, which makes it cloudy. Similarly, in pools that aren’t used very often or aren’t well maintained, the water can become cloudy due to dirt and debris falling in and deteriorating.

To prevent your pool water from turning cloudy, Backyard Ocean suggests the following steps:

  1. Check water circulation.  Poor water circulation means that the chemicals in your pool cannot do their jobs properly. Algae also loves breeding in stagnant water, so make sure that your above ground pool pumps are working effectively.
  2. Ensure proper filtration. Pool filters remove unwanted particles from the water. In order for swimming pool filters to function as they should, they need to be cleaned or replaced regularly.
  3. Find the right chemistry balance for your pool water. The right chemistry balance means having the right pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and temperature levels. Pool water balancers help maintain the correct mix so it’s good to have them on hand so you can restore balance quickly and easily.

When your pool is clean regularly, it will be far easier to keep it so. If you already have cloudy water,

Every swimming pool needs to be clean for the sanitation reasons and the most popular sanitizing agent is chlorine. Although chlorine works great to kill bacteria, it has its drawbacks too. If you’re not too keen on using chlorine for your pool, take a look at some of the chlorine alternatives to see which works for you.

  1. Bromine – Bromine is often used in spas because of its ability to withstand high temperatures. It can also function properly at high pH levels. Pool owners can add bromine to pool water with a brominator or dispenser.
  2. Persulphates – Effective in killing bacteria and eliminating other invisible debris, persulphates break down small particles in the water until they are no longer visible to the naked eye, allowing them to be caught by pool filtering systems. Perlsulphates come in sachet and tablet forms which are easily added to the water.
  3. Natural Minerals – Minerals like silver, zinc, copper, palladium and carbon are great for eliminating bacteria and algae in the water. Natural minerals are added to pool water with the use of an ionizer and can be used separately or together in specially designed packs.

If you’re looking for chlorine alternatives that are gentler on the eyes, skin and hair, take a look at Backyard Ocean’s selection of pool chemicals and see which one you can use.

Since everyday cleaning is next to impossible, the various types of pool chemicals help break down dirt in your pool water and keep the it free of bacteria, catching things your skimmer can’t. But sometimes the names of pool chemicals can be confusing. Here’s the low-down on the different types of swimming pool chemicals and what they do:

  • Chlorine – This most commonly used pool chemical is brought in to help keep bacteria at bay. Without chlorine in the pool water, your swimming pool would be a breeding ground of bacteria, mosquitos and other pests.
  • pH Reducer or Enhancer – By their names, you can already tell what they do. The pH reducer is important if you have hard water in your area. Hard water contains minerals that create buildup, such as calcium and magnesium. If soft water is a problem in your area, you’ll need a pH enhancer, usually an alkali, to neutralize the water.
  • Algaecide – Algae builds up in any water, moving or stagnant, and usually forms along the sides and bottom of a swimming pool. An algaecide keeps algae problems to a minimum.
  • Flocculants – Some dirt in your pool is microscopic. Because of this, it’s hard to remove them all without the help of flocculants. Flocculants work by acting as a binder, causing the small particles to clump together, become larger and thus easier for your skimmer or filter to catch them

Whenever you’re using pool chemicals, make sure that you take the necessary precautions in keeping yourself and your family safe. Adhere to warnings and precautions made by the pool industry, and test your pool water regularly to maintain the right balance.
