It’s important to keep fit and healthy especially during the winter season. Although it seems tempting to just sit around the couch all day with a mug of hot chocolate, a sedentary lifestyle may lead to extra weight gain. The extremely cold temperature also weakens the body, allowing simple ailments, such as a cold, to attack. So during these months, put on your warm clothes, step out of your home, and get a game or two going. Here are a few winter sports that have remarkable health benefits:

1. Cross-country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is an entertaining and exciting sport. People may not know the aerobic requirements of this activity also help you get into shape. Gliding down a snow-filled mountain slope is an enjoyable way to tone your upper body and thighs. At the same time, it’s also a great endurance and cardiovascular workout.

Snow days don’t just mean colder weather outside. More often than not, with your driveway blocked, you find yourself trapped inside your home until the next snow blower arrives. Before you know it, you’re feeling restless and pacing about the house.

Not too many people know that a condition called “cabin fever” exists. It is defined as a claustrophobic reaction that occurs when a person is isolated for a period of time. It usually takes place during the winter months, when sunlight is scarce and there are limited chances for outdoor activity. If you’re faced with the prospect of snowy days for quite some time, browse through our tips for how to avoid cabin fever:

Start a Hobby

If you’re into knitting, papier-mâché, or pottery, having all that time on your hands actually works really well for you. For example, making Christmas cards out of cardboard and pictures from magazines is not just a touching gesture for loved ones; it’s also a way of releasing all that pent-up energy. Decorating a Christmas tree could be just as therapeutic as gazing at colorful outdoor scenery.

Stay Active

With the freezing air, outdoor exercise might prove to be impractical and dangerous. A challenging treadmill session, though, could be as beneficial as your usual jog outside. A snow day is also the perfect time to set up a home gym and pop some exercise DVDs into the player. This will not just help you through the winter; it will also develop your stamina for outdoor activities later in the year.

The weather is still freezing at this time of the month, but that does not stop avid swimmers from taking a plunge into the ice-cold waters for a winter swim.

Winter swimming is widely practiced in European countries and believed to bring about spiritual cleansing. During the Epiphany, people flock over to lakes and rivers to dive head first into the freezing waters.

In addition to its religious influences, winter swimming is also thought to have a therapeutic effect on the body. Winter swimming groups like the Russia’s Polar Bears and the US’ Coney Island Bear Club swear by the goodness of a quick dip in icy water. A winter swim, followed by relaxing in a hot sauna, supposedly promotes blood circulation.

Although winter swimming has its health benefits, those who are keen on trying this bizarre sport must take precaution. Hypothermia is a serious risk, and those who are new to this sport must limit themselves to only a few seconds.

Short days and a constant drop in temperature can make anyone feel like hibernating. Break out of a rut and fight the winter blues with these easy steps:

1.       Make your home cozy.

Color helps in battling the winter blahs. Make your home inviting by painting your walls with a bright color or throwing a vibrant fabric over your furniture. Arrange throw pillows on the couch and on the floor to create your own winter haven.

2.       Exercise.

Going outside for a jog can do wonders for your mood. Exercising raises serotonin levels, which help you stay cheerful even during the gloomy weather. If you don’t like to exercise, try other winter activities like skiing, tubing, ice skating, and snowboarding.

3.       Wake up early.

Maximize your daylight hours by setting your alarm clock at least 30 minutes early. This helps you catch more sunlight, which can greatly improve your mood.

Don’t let the cold weather keep you away from all the fun. Combat the winter doldrums by enjoying the outdoors.
