Swimming pools are never complete without lights. Illuminating the area around the pool not only beautifies your landscape, it also keeps your family secure and safe. Aside from aesthetic and safety reasons, landscape and outdoor lights can extend the hours having fun with friends or entertaining your guests.

Lighting Methods

There are different lighting methods used by homeowners and sometimes, these methods are combined to produce a desired effect.

  1. Uplighting adds drama  and turns trees, ponds, and walls into elegant spectacles.
  2. Downlighting mimics the light cast by the moon at night, and considered a natural lighting method.
  3. Pathlighting consists of lights lined along pathways to illuminate the steps for safety.

Lighting your pool

Lights along the border of the swimming pool are a very common sight simply because it’s a beautiful way to showcase the pool at night. This highlights the pool’s rim and spreads light across the surface.

Aside from lighting the pool, you can also use lamp post lights to enhance the landscape. This adds to the illumination that guides your family or guests to safety. It makes the entire scenery more visible so you can appreciate the beauty of your landscape at night.

If safety, security and enjoyment are your utmost concern, make sure to have a lighting plan for your pool area. Check our Backyard Ocean’s outdoor lighting options for your swimming pool.

Playing in a swimming pool with family and friends is one way of beating the summer heat. Check out these classic swimming pool games that are bound to keep everyone cooled off while having fun.

  1. Cannonball Contest – A classic pool game that gets everyone splashing around, the cannonball contest involves jumping off a pool board and creating the biggest splash. Players are first divided into two teams. The team goes to the opposite sides of the pool. The playing team will position themselves on the deeper end. Each member takes the diving board and jumps off with all his might, with knees touching the stomach. Whoever creates the biggest splash from the team will get the highest point from the judges, which is the non-playing team.
  2. Chicken Fight – This is another fun pool game that you can play under the sun. You need to form two pairs: One of the players from each team sits on his partner’s shoulders. With all their might, the players on top try to knock each other down into the water. Whoever stays on his partner’s shoulders is the winner.
  3. Whirlpool – Whirlpool is a fun game to play during a pool party. For this game, you need to ask everyone in the pool to form a compact circle. Ask everyone to walk first, then jog, and finally run to create a whirlpool in the middle. You can let the water current carry you around the pool or move against its direction for a challenge.

With these classic pool games, you can beat boredom and the hot summer sun while enjoying the refreshing waters of your swimming pool.

Hot tubs are associated with recreation and relaxation—two things known to combat stress. The thought of submerging yourself in sparkling and pristine water is almost as relaxing as the action itself. Many people install their own hot tubs at home, not just for luxury but for health purposes.

To completely enjoy the benefits of your hot tub, a clean and healthy environment must be fostered since algae and bacteria grow quickly in warm water. Spa chemicals aid in the maintenance as they keep the water clean, sanitized, and all set to invigorate you.

Spa Chemicals

Spa chemicals are used to purify water and prevent unwanted formation of organics. The function of cleaners is to remove not just the harmful substances, but also the accumulation of dirt and oil. Some chemicals offer a long lasting cleansing effect while others are only used to clean the equipment after drainage. Bio-degradable spa chemicals are also available for an eco-friendly way of keeping hot tubs hygienic and dirt-free.

Start-up Kits

Suppliers offer chlorine or bromine spa start-up kits that provide owners with products they need. These kits often come with instructions for opening or refilling the spa. Most of them also include a surface cleaner, water clarifier, oxidizer, pH increaser and various other cleansers.

Bromine vs. Chlorine

The most common sanitizers are chlorine (typically used in swimming pools) and bromine, which prevent algae and bacterial growth, when kept at the right levels.

The chlorine sanitizing granules are not only easy to use but also very economical. They dissolve easily and completely so you can take advantage of its ability to sanitize your spa. But most spa owners say that chlorine should only be used occasionally (as a shocking agent) and not as the main spa sanitizer.

Meanwhile, brominating tablets offer the cleansing effects of chlorine minus the odor. Although more expensive, bromine is preferable for sanitizing warm water in spas because it’s more stable. Add a bromine booster if you want to establish a bromine reserve in your hot tub at once.
