Just when you thought dumpsters are only made for garbage, New York City pulled out these long metal bins and turned them into swimming pools. Placed on the bank of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, the dumpsters were converted into portable swimming pools for an exclusive party. Invitations to this hush-hush summer fiesta were given to a select few who were asked not to forward them.

With only three dozen people invited, the party became an exclusive getaway right in the middle of a busy neighborhood. Cabanas were set up along with grill stations and some lounge chairs. Colored lanterns hung overhead, giving the hidden space a cool vibe. Music playing from a portable system completed the party ambience.

The concept was developed by David Belt, president of Macro-Sea, to create an urban oasis out of repurposed materials and underused spaces. Since dumpsters are basically everywhere, they became the focal point of a party project for New York, where swimming pools are few and far between.

The insides of the containers were filed down to smooth over the edges. Sand was placed at the bottom and pool toys were thrown into the water for a more festive atmosphere.

It sounded like the perfect urban getaway, with cool people having a blast! …And anybody would love to get an invitation to THAT kind of party! *Ahem*

Swimming is a favorite activity for children during summer, and it’s fun and good exercise too. But children don’t fully realize the danger of going into the water all by themselves. Here are some tips on how you can keep your children safe around swimming pools:

  1. Teach your kids how to swim. Swimming is an important skill that children should learn at an early age, as early as possible, especially if you have a pool in your backyard. Enroll them in swimming classes to learn the basics, and be sure they get a lot of practice. (It’s good for you too!)
  2. Teach your kids about pool safety. When young, they can learn not to run or play near the pool, to always use the ladder, to always have a swimming buddy, and all those pool safety basics we adults adhere to almost instinctually.
  3. Install a pool fence. You can teach them all about safety, but children simply love to play. Keep them away from the swimming pool area by surrounding it with a sturdy safety fence. This barrier prevents children from going near the pool without adult supervision.
  4. Get a pool alarm. A great addition to any swimming pool, whether or not you have kids, is a pool alarm. A traditional pool alarm will sound when something heavy disturbs the water. Another way to alarm your pool area is to install a gate alarm on your pool fence.

Teaching your kids how to to swim and about pool safety procedures will help them make the right decisions when it comes to playing, but when all else fails a pool fence/alarm combo is a solid back-up. These 4 steps are a good way to guard against accidents, but there is no sure-fire method to avoid them, as in any situation. Backyard Ocean recommends always supervising your kids when they are playing, in the pool or out.

On the coast of Chile–in San Alfonso del Mar, Algarrobo to be precise–lies the world’s biggest swimming pool, formally recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. How big is it, you ask? It’s 3,324 feet long (or more than 1 kilometer) and contains 660,000 gallons of water. Now how’s that for a swimming pool?! Certainly our above-ground swimming pools are no match for this one…but we can try!

Chilean businessman and biochemist Fernando Fischmann says that he decided to set his mega structure right next to the sea because some people are afraid of big waves or a potentially unfriendly marine critter but still want to enjoy everything that makes the beach the beach.

If you’re worrying about the ecological impact of this pool, don’t. This pool uses recycled sea water, making it the world’s largest saltwater pool as well! This also means that it uses less chemicals than other above ground pools, as the salt filters out dirt and bacteria.

This monster of a pool is bringing tourists from all over the world to San Alfonso del Mar in Algarrobo, Chile, and why wouldn’t it?
