North America sure has some pretty amazing sights and places for us to go! Here are our top 3 must-see summer destinations in North America:

  1. Muskoka Cottage Country, Ontario, Canada—Rated by National Geographic as the number one place to be this summer, this lake and waterfall destination 2 hours outside of Toronto is an exquisite display of more than 8000 miles of shoreline, quaint towns and villages that are rooted in history, and gigantic granite mountains. In August, you can even catch a chorus of wolves howling at the Algonquin Park. If traveling with family, nearby locations offers campfires, canoeing, volleyball, and paddle-boating.
  2. Roatan, Honduras—Divers will love the living coral reef surrounding the island of Roatan, located 30 miles off the Honduran mainland. Overflowing with marine life, this Caribbean destination is also a fantastic eco-destination because of its tireless work towards promoting sustainable tourism and growth amongst locals and tourists. Monitored closely, visitors can interact with bottlenose dolphins through snorkeling, small dolphin dives, and dolphin scuba camps. After exploring the lush mangrove canals, visitors can then lounge in their reserved cabanas or hammocks.
  3. Guatemala—Adventure junkies and culture vultures will love what the country of Guatemala has to offer. Climb the active Pacaya Volcano in Antigua, or make a s’more or two on a lava river while hiking! Pacaya has been active for almost 300 years and attracts many visitors. If you prefer a more cultural trip, check out the Tikal National Park to see thousands of ancient Mayan structures scattered across the sprawling jungle. Truly a magnificent sight!

If you’re tired of just lounging around your backyard swimming pool this summer, check out these amazing destinations and make this a summer to remember!

A common household product, chlorine is one of the key pool chemicals needed to maintain pools and hot tubs. While chlorine kills bacteria and microorganisms that can be dangerous to humans, improper usage of these pool chemicals can be hazardous as well. But first, how exactly does chlorine work?

Chlorine kills these bacteria through what scientists call a “fairly simple chemical reaction”. We will attempt to make our own explanation of this process as simple as possible.

When chlorine is added to pools, it breaks down into several chemicals including the bacteria-killing hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ion (OCl-).  The reaction formed when these two bacteria killers join is called “free chlorine”. These two attack bacteria, goes through the lipids (fats) in the bacteria’s cell walls, then destroys the enzymes and structures inside the cells, effectively killing them.

For the chlorine to properly do it’s job, the pool has to have a pH level between 7 to 8. If it’s too high, not enough HOCl is present and it will take longer to clean the pool. After the chlorine is done cleaning the pool, the combine with another chemical (e.g. ammonia) or break down into smaller atoms. These makes the chlorine harmless and the pool safe to swim in.

In later posts, we will discuss the possible side effects of chlorine and how to avoid them.

One of the popular swimming pool accessories on the market are floating pool loungers. In a nutshell, these are simply floaters big enough for you to stretch out on. Using swimming pool loungers are a great way to relax and enjoy your pool at the same time. In these loungers, you can tan, read, listen to music, eat, drink, or even get a massage! Before you go out and buy a pool lounger, read this tips to make sure you get the kind that’s best for you!

  1. How much will you spend? This is always the first question to ask yourself. Your budget will determine the kind of product you will get, so think about it wisely! Generally, better quality items sell for much higher and will often last longer.
  2. What will you use it for? If you’re looking for something to use in your home for years to come, then your best bet would be to get a more expensive item. However, if you’re looking for something that you’ll want to bring with you on vacation and dispose of there, then you’re better off with a cheaper variety.
  3. What material do you prefer? Typically, pool loungers (particularly the inflatable kind) are made of sturdy material such as plastic and vinyl. If you’re willing to spend more, you can also buy non-inflatable foam floaters. The best foam floater in the market? Ensolite foam.
  4. What style do you want? There’s so much variety out there! You can choose from the fun animal-shaped floaters that the kids will love to more sophisticated pool loungers that double as hydro-massagers!

Have fun lounging in the pool!

There’s nothing like a swig of something cold in the middle of a hot summer day. While there’s a ton of great summer drink recipes out there, let’s take a look at BYO’s 5 favorite summer drinks to sip by the swimming pool:

Fruit Drinks

This summer why not try a combination of fresh fruits and turn them into an agua fresca that you can sip by the pool. Or create a mocktail version of BYO’s favorite tropical cocktail, the Pina Colada!

Lemonade

Add a twist to memories of childhood lemonade stands by tweaking your lemonade with a bit of raspberry or other syrups. Simply mix together your choice syrup, lemonade concentrate, water, lime juice, lemon-lime soda and some crushed ice for some refreshing and bubbly lemonade! To finish off your drink, add a mint leaf and a raspberry to the glass.

Sodas and Floats

Sodas and floats might not be the healthiest of summer drinks, but they sure are tasty! Make a classic root beer float by scooping vanilla ice cream into a tall glass, pouring some root beer over it, and repeating the process until you get to the rim of the glass. Add some whipped cream and a maraschino cherry for a special touch.

Iced Coffee

Make your own mochachino by blending together one cup each of strong coffee and milk, three tablespoons of sugar, and a dash of salt. When thoroughly mixed, add three tablespoons of chocolate syrup and three cups of ice cream and blend until smooth.

Iced Tea

This summer, give that old favorite a kick by adding some peach nectar, flavored syrup or fresh fruit! For more guidance, master chef Bobby Flay has really great suggestions for adults and kids alike!

Drink away the heat with these fantastic summer thirst quenchers!
